Good sound quality, inexpensive, linux-friendly

Reviewed by: E. Foster,
I was looking for a usb soundcard that had mic-in to replace my current usb soundcard. I bought this one because it advertised mac/linux(!) compatibility on the back where the other card I was considering only talked about windows. I'm sure the other card was linux compatible as well, but I like to reward linux-friendly vendors.

I am very pleased with the sound quality of this card, and while I am not entirely sure I like the form factor (it seems a bit precarious), it has two advantages over alternatives:
1.) it does not usb ports that are directly to the left/right of it or below it. My other usb soundcard was wide enough and thick enough that it caused problems with anything near it.
2.) it uses a standard mini-usb cable in case you want more length, rather than needing a usb M-F extension cord. I use mini-usb to charge all my cell phones, so I have plenty of them.

minor problems:
1.) The LED is too bright and does an annoying fade-in/out when it is idle.
2.) no optical out (but I knew that when I bought it.)
Extremely Fragile - Not Practical

I bought this sound tube to resolve an issue with a windows 7 upgrade on my fujitsu, wanted to take the shortcut to get a mic in and out. I have had it less than a week and will be returning it. The whole retro tube concept is great-the blue light flaring is nifty-but this external usb soundcard is just too fragile to be practical for a laptop. Maybe someone who uses a desktop replacement laptop and doesn't move their laptop could use this without trouble.

First off, my lifebook has its usb ports in the back, meaning that if I angle my screen back even just a little, it will push the tube which sticks up, backwards. It is not the length of a regular flash with the tube on the end so don't let the photo deceive you,in fact, the tube is flush in line with your computer when inserted-no space. The male flash stick is like a tiny arm with another plastic "L" and then another plastic "neck" between it and the groovy tube itself-uhoh-too many interconnecting parts. This is not a solid unit. There is already a gap between the stick, the"L" and the neck. The connection is so loose both in the usb stick to port and the neck and L going in to the stick, that it fell off, taking the groove tube with it. This is with using it in a 4 port usb hub that I bought to avoid using the port in back (trying to head off the inevitable decapitation of the groove tube). The guts of the piece are right there, and I had to cram it all back in (try). Now the piece is touchy if I move it wrong, losing my connection. If I can't return it I am going to have to use a narrow splint and wrap black electrical tape around it. That is NOT what you would expect for around $30 now is it???? I'd stay away and buy a soundwave or a turtle. I'll be purchasing one of those two shortly.
